Highly Efficient Reefer Shipping
ZESPRI® Kiwifruit is predominately transported by ships (reefer) vessels and in containers whach are significantly more carbon efficient that rail or airfreight. A major finding of a recent study commissioned by the 360 Quality Association and conducted by the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit of Lincoln University found the following:
A recent initiative sees ZESPRI® Kiwfruit in containers carried on the decks of reefer vessels of our European shipping programme, optimising the volume moved per shipment and reducing emissions by up to 8%.
Larger, More Efficient Vessels
ZESPRI® Kiwifruit is increasingly carried on larger and more efficient vessels.
A recent report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and International Transport Forum indicates the overall potential CO
2 emission reductions for new vessel design strategies can be estimated in the range of 5 - 30%, with combined design and operation optimisation of over 40% by 2020.
Modern engines are being designed and trialed by ZESPRI's shipping partners to reduce emissions through fuel efficiency and the use of environmentally superior biofuels.
New design initiatives such as air lubrication can be used to reduce the friction between the water and the ship's hull, delivering net efficiency gains of up to 10%. The use of modern and more environmentally-friendly refrigerants also contribute to reducing the overall emissions. These vessels will lead to even further reductions of our environmental footprint.
