The ongoing development of new varieties is a strong example of innovation. The sweeter tasting, nutritious, ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit, developed by Plant & Food Research New Zealand, and owned by ZESPRI, has put ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit at the forefront of the kiwifruit industry worldwide. Despite being on the market for just over 10 years it is New Zealand’s second highest horticultural export earner after ZESPRI® GREEN Kiwifruit.
ZESPRI, together with Plant & Food Research, has created the world’s largest natural kiwifruit breeding programme. Future varieties already under development will deliver kiwifruit of different tastes, colours and sizes to appeal to specific consumer demands.
Comprehensive consumer testing is undertaken in international markets to assess the taste qualities of existing and new kiwifruit varieties. This insight to consumer attitudes provides ZESPRI with the opportunity to match future kiwifruit varieties with consumer taste preferences.
Our commitment to continually improving the quality and taste of ZESPRI® Kiwifruit is shared by our growers. The implementation of innovative orchard management protocols and environmentally friendly growing methods continues to enhance the consistent quality and taste of ZESPRI® Kiwifruit.
ZESPRI works closely with the network of growers to share agricultural knowledge and expertise and to develop and implement sustainable orchard practices. Innovative growers are implementing sustainability initiatives such as native tree and wetland regeneration to attract birds and wildlife back into orchards as natural pest management controls. Natural water resources are also being harnessed for irrigation and frost protection purposes. Protecting our environment for future generations is as important to our growers as achieving enhanced orchard productivity and profitability.
The health and nutritional benefits of ZESPRI® Kiwifruit are well known to loyal kiwifruit consumers. Strategic partnerships with leading research organisations, such as the Riddet Institute, provides ZESPRI with the opportunity to scientifically validate health claims and present tangible health messages about ZESPRI® Kiwifruit to consumers and healthcare professionals around the globe.
