After a week of tough competition at the Anchor AIMS Games, Murrays Bay Intermediate School (MBIS) walked away with an impressive cup and medal tally (2 Cups, 4 Gold, 5 Silver and 5 Bronze medals) as well as a voucher for $1,000 worth of sports equipment – courtesy of Zespri and their Post Harvest Kiwifruit Suppliers.
This is the first year Zespri has been involved in the Anchor AIMS Games, a tournament held in the heart of kiwifruit country. As part of the sponsorship, Zespri handed out samples of Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit and coordinated a number of fun and entertaining activities at various venues to entertain AIMS Games participants and spectators between games.
At Blake Park, students learnt that one Zespri SunGold provided them with their daily vitamin C needs by participating in a “Throw for Gold” game – where they threw a kiwifruit ball into targets. Various targets represented parts of the human body that also benefited from the nutritional elements of Zespri SunGold. At Gordon Spratt Reserve, students ‘Scooped their daily vitamin C’ by scooping Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit off a vine in a virtual orchard whilst bindfolded. Both activations enabled sudents to win points for their school.
Points were tallied up and at the end of the week the winning school with the most points was Murrays Bay Intermediate School - receiving a $1,000 voucher for sporting equipment. Congratulations MBIS!
The members of the girl’s football team that went to AIMS Games describe the prize win as “awesome”. “We worked hard all week at the Zespri challenges, making sure we were involved every single day. Now other students of our school can enjoy new sports gear.”
Brandon Kruyen, Director of Sport at Murrays Bay Intermediate, together with the team members, have already started preparing a wish list for sporting equipment.
“We will be looking at equipment which will enhance our classroom PE sessions and make the greatest impact on student involvement in sports programmes,” said Brandon. “This could include equipment for new sports as well as things like sticks, bibs, nets, and balls for the sports which already have high participation rates”.
Zespri Head of Communications and External Relations Michael Fox says Zespri was thrilled to have seen such enthusiastic participation at both its sites during the event.
“We really wanted to make sure that as well as providing a fun spot for kids to visit during a break from their sports activity, we were demonstrating the nutritional value and health benefits of including Zespri SunGold as part of peoples’ daily diet.
“We were blown away by the skills and enthusiasm of the participants and the number of schools that visited us and congratulate all the kids and schools that got involved.”
